It was reported early this morning by the Canadian press that two students (both Cuban Nationals) who were attending Carleton University in Ottawa were arrested after inadvertently wandering into the United States from Canada, the students claimed they were on a backpacking trip along the border and that they had no idea they had entered the United States. At the time of their arrest the two students were 120 miles northwest of Malmstrom AFB in Montana, Malmstrom is part of the DOD's strategic missile command.
In an ironic twist the pair were sent to Guantanamo where they will remain indefinitely while authorities review the case. When contacted for an official response the Cuban embassy in Ottawa said "it is our understanding that they are just a couple of kids who got lost and wandered across the border and we are hopeful that they will be released from custody very soon". Friends of the two students who attended classes with them speculated that the only reason the two were arrested was because they are Cuban.
